Every late June, the Texas Medical Center exhales an entire generation of senior residents and inhales a new one. The cycle hits hard on July 1, but the moving wave starts around June 18 and runs through July 14. We’ve worked the Med Center transition window every year since 2017, and the rules are nothing like a normal Houston move. Loading docks are timed in 30-minute slots, COIs go through hospital legal weeks in advance, and a physician with 7am Monday rounds can’t lose Sunday to a four-hour curbside wait.
What Makes The July 1 Cycle Different
Residents finishing fellowships at MD Anderson, Memorial Hermann, Houston Methodist, Texas Children’s, and Baylor College of Medicine rotate into attending positions on July 1. Incoming residents start orientation the same week. For two weeks that intersection means roughly 1,800 physician households turning over inside the 1000-acre TMC footprint — and the surrounding 77030, 77005, 77006 and 77025 ZIPs.
- Hospital-credentialed COIs. Each TMC institution has its own insurance certificate template. MD Anderson’s additional-insured clause differs from Memorial Hermann’s. We pre-stage all five formats in our HQ COI library so Amanda Russo can release them the same business day a request lands.
- After-hours dock windows. Resident-housing buildings on Holcombe and South MacGregor run reservation systems with 90-minute slots, often 6pm-9pm or 9pm-midnight. Day slots vanish by mid-May.
- Sterile-equipment crates. A surprising share of physician moves include personal microscopes, anatomy models, partial reference libraries, and trauma-grade exam tools. We seal-shrink and label, never tape directly onto sterile housings.
- Compressed timeline. Most physicians get one weekend between fellowship close-out and new-position orientation. There is no second weekend.

MD Anderson — 1515 Holcombe Blvd
MD Anderson’s on-campus housing partners require advance security clearance for moving crews and 24-hour ID submission. Their dock-master enforces a strict 90-minute slot. We dispatch four-mover crews for any MD Anderson resident move so the slot doesn’t bleed.
Memorial Hermann — Texas Medical Center campus
The Memorial Hermann ecosystem includes physician housing in the Museum District and West U. Dock access is curbside at most addresses, so the risk is parking enforcement rather than freight elevators. We pull short-term moving permits with the City of Houston before peak weekends.
Houston Methodist — 6565 Fannin St
Methodist runs a tighter dock reservation calendar than any other TMC institution. After-hours windows after 7pm are released first, daytime weekday slots last. Our standing recommendation is a 6:30pm load start for Methodist residents moving from Smith Tower-area apartments.
Texas Children’s — 6621 Fannin St
Pediatric subspecialty fellowships finishing at Texas Children’s often move families with children under 5, plus medical-grade home equipment. We dedicate a separate truck for the family bedroom load so kids don’t lose their mattress at 11pm.
Baylor College of Medicine — 1 Baylor Plaza
Baylor faculty moves trend toward established physicians taking attending appointments, often from out-of-state. We coordinate long-distance inbound hauls with TMC area unloads, including storage holds when housing closes don’t line up.

The MD-Spouse Load Problem

Sterile-Equipment Handling

Equipment never contacts adhesive tape directly; pad wrap is anchored with shrink film over the pad, not the device. Microscopes ride in dedicated foam-lined hard cases. Reference libraries go in book boxes capped at 35 lb so the spine pressure stays manageable.
What we do not move: controlled pharmaceuticals, radioactive isotopes, biological samples, or any item that requires chain-of-custody documentation. Those go through hospital-internal logistics, not a household-goods carrier. We will gladly schedule around them.
